Hmmm, interesting point, Joe: as prisoners have healthcare, that would make breaking the law by not buying insurance a way to get healthcare. That could be a useful campaigning tool. Mass refusal, mass lawbreaking, could be a televisual successor to burning Vietnam draft cards at the courthouse: large crowds of people turning themselves in at police stations (precinct houses, is it?) for not having bought health insurance...

Just got a form email from Harry Reid trying to justify the Senate bill as something to be proud of. No way to reply, unfortunately for me, fortunately for him.

I've been told the reason that reconciliation has not been broached (51 votes rather than 60, if anyone doesn't know the procedure) is that it would take too long, and the bill would not be passed by the end of this month, which is Obama's target date.

I'm not sure reconciliation would work anyway. There are a whole bunch of Blue Dogs, probably more than 9, who could scotch that process if they banded together.

I'm remaining adamant that MoveOn.org and other progressive Americans should lobby Bernie Sanders and Alan Grayson and anyone else who might stand up to the so-called "moderates" in the Senate and House, to vote against the bill. If that puts us back to square one, so be it. The few positive concessions that have been thrown at the American people do nothing to wrest control of health care away from insurance and pharmaceutical companies. And... if the Stupak Amendment and whatever Senate clone appears goes through, the bill will do more harm to individual choice than anyone can possibly imagine.

That's my hobby horse, and I'm stickin' to the saddle.
